“The First Amendment right of free speech and right to practice any faith, or no faith, are foundational American values that must extend to everyone…” – Member of the Congressional Prayer Caucus
Federal Legislation: Let’s pray the filibuster stays intact as is and that the senate is a firewall against all bills and language – all efforts – to undermine our Constitutional Republic, Judeo-Christian Heritage, and First Amendment Rights.
Lawmakers and faith-based groups have several concerns about the Respect for Marriage Act, legislation that would codify same-sex marriage into federal law. Concerns include that the bill doesn’t have adequate protections for religious liberty. Also, it would “repeal several provisions of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) – the 1996 law that received bipartisan support, including from then U.S. Sen. Joe Biden and U.S. Rep. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, and from Democratic President Bill Clinton, who signed it.” Senator James Lankford (R-OK) took to the Senate floor to share his opposition to the Respect for Marriage Act, which he believes will lead to the violation of Americans’ religious liberty and their constitutional freedom to live their faith. Today, the Senate will debate several amendments, include religious liberty-related amendments. They need 60 votes to proceed. Still congressional races remain uncalled. Also, the Georgia senate race is extremely important. The runoff is scheduled for December 6th.
Recently, Biden announced a Resolution on the ERA and called on Congress to take action. On March 17, 2021, the House passed H. J. Res. 17 to remove the deadline for the ratification of the ERA. A companion resolution (S. J. Res. 1) awaits further action in the Senate Judiciary Committee. There’s many concerns about the future of conscience and religious freedom, should this Constitutional Amendment advance federally or at the state level.
Religious Liberty Legislation: Continue praying consistently and fervently for the successful passage of legislation that effectively protects our Judeo-Christian heritage and First Amendment Rights. Also, pray that bills and resolutions that undermine our Rights will be unsuccessful.
